compound interest
Some inspirational Friday reading can be had in Dick Hamming’s You and Your Research talk at Bell Labs.
There are too many bon mots to quote them all, but consider this snippet:
“Knowledge and productivity are like compound interest.” [...] Given two people with exactly the same ability, the one person who manages day in and day out to get in one more hour of thinking will be tremendously more productive over a lifetime.
This reminded me of a recent quote from kernel hacker Ingo Molnar that went something like, “the only thing preventing you from becoming an expert is experience”. (I can’t seem to find the source of this quote anywhere on teh googles though…)
And Landon Donovan never jogs. Anywhere.
Food for thought.
