Top 15

I’m sitting here detoxing from the past 2 weeks of vacation, doing a bit of laundry, catching up on my digital life, and listening to the Top 15′s I received in the mail whilst away.

I can’t think of a better method of re-entry and way to kick off the new year.

Let me ‘splain.

Pick your top 15 songs of all time, burn them onto a cd, and send them to your friends.

That’s it.

You can use whatever criteria you please for your selection. They could be your desert island songs. They could be songs from the first time you realized you were in love. Or they could just be songs that make you smile. It doesn’t matter; the process is meant to be intimately personal. The point is to share a small slice of your soul with your closest friends.

If anyone wants to do this, let me know. I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.

I created my Top 15 a while ago and sent it out, but am now just reaping the fruits of the harvest, and realizing how cool this idea is.

Shout out to the Seattle crew — ekg, causey, styles — that came up with this idea. It’s brilliant.

Pedantry: when I sent my cd out, I deliberately didn’t include a track listing or any explanation or put the songs in any rank order (I arranged them for listenability). The goal was to have them just listen to the whole thing in entirety as a unit of work, and appreciate it without any preconceived notions. I did send up a small followup later that described each track in rank order and why I included it. You don’t have to do it that way. You could order the tracks however you want, etc. etc.

Why top 15? Because top 10 is lame and 15 tracks are about what can fit onto a cd comfortably.
