virtual excellence

Mac OS X is the only unix with a decent UI. One of the few things it lacks is support for virtual desktops. There are a few commercial programs out there, but tonight, I found a GPL’ed program that does an excellent job: Desktop Manager for Mac OS X is highly recommended in my favorite category: free software that doesn’t suck.

blah colgate

Colgate claims that their new “Total Advanced Fresh” toothpaste will fight bad breath for 12 hours at a time. Intrigued, I bought some to test it out. After eagerly brushing my teeth, my tongue tasted funny and was the slightest bit numb. I then went to sleep and woke up a mere 10 hours later with regular old morning breath.

A pox on Colgate for misleading me.

conversations with darwin

Luckily, I did not win a Darwin Award today, although I came damn close. At some point, I decided that I needed to trim a tree that was growing too close to the roof on my house. So I went to Home Depot and bought myself a 1.5 horsepower electric chainsaw.

First, getting on to the roof was challenging. I ended up crawling out of an upper story window, after ruining a recalcitrant screen that simply wouldn’t come out the easy way. Once up on the roof, I learned that it was a LOT steeper than I originally thought. My plan of sauntering around waving a chainsaw at random branches quickly changed, as I realized that the plan sucked.

I did manage to cut a few branches down, but not without slipping a few times and risking both a bone breaking fall as well as accidental amputation before retreating.

It’s scary to think I can rationalize some of the past Darwin Award winners as simply getting a bad rap and not being able to put a positive spin on just what the hell they were doing.

In other news, continuing along the lines of home improvement, I borrowed a hedge clipper to tame the shrubbery in the front yard. The improvement is quite noticable, and just goes to show that a well-trimmed bush is a fine sight to behold.

Oh the hazards of commuting by bicycle. Got stung by a bee today for the first time in years, and some dickhead decided to shout at me as he drove past. Tried to catch up to him and tell him what a putz he was, but to no avail. Ah well.

riding the dragon’s tail

Some weekends are longer than others, this one unexpectedly so. Everyone’s home and safe now, but I’m still not sure whether our little trip was better than work…

closure

Closed on my house last weekend. Yay for debt.

Spent Labor Day weekend in San Francisco hanging out with Luke. Saw the Wine Country (can’t believe I lived in CA for 8 months without visiting this area, although I wasn’t 21 at the time), Muir forest’s redwoods, and ate lots of good food all over the city. Any time I’m on the west coast, I have to stop at In-N-Out.

Here’s a page with the secret In-N-Out menu code words. Here’s another page with some more secret items. Finally, here’s a guy who ate a 20×20 and lived to tell the tale.
